Once, not too long ago, Vioxx was the drug of choice for patients who were looking for relief from the symptoms of osteoarthritis pain. Vioxx was officially withdrawn from the United States drug market in 2004. Why was Vioxx withdrawn from the U.S. drug market and around the world? Vioxx Use Warnings

The prescription drug Vioxx carried many warnings. Patients were warned to notify their medical professional immediately if they developed feelings of discomfort, tenderness, abdominal pain, nausea, bloody, tarry or black stools, and nausea. Other serious side effects included sudden and unexplained weight gain, water retention, swelling, lethargy, fatigue, skin rash, yellowing of skin or eyes, itching, flu-like symptoms, bleeding, unusual bruising, and other potential signs of infection or side effects.

What Was Vioxx Used For? How Did It Work?

Before being withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2004, the drug Vioxx was classified in the class of drugs described as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Vioxx worked by suppressing the substances that are responsible for much of the pain, inflammation and fever felt throughout the body by the presence of osteoarthritis. Vioxx helped to reduce the inflammation, pain, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis. Other forms of arthritis were also helped by Vioxx, including some forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine pain, menstrual pain, and other forms of acute pain in adults.

Risk Factors Associated With Vioxx Use

There were several risk factors associated with Vioxx use. Some of these included whether the patient smoked, whether the patient drank alcohol, a history of ulcer or bleeding in the stomach, a history of kidney disease, a history of liver disease, a history of congestive heart failure, a history of high blood pressure, a history of fluid retention, a history of coagulation, a history of warfarin, a history of taking steroidal medications, and a history of asthma.
