Levoxyl (levothyroxine) is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Therapeutically, it is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism and to prevent and treat goiter. Levoxyl works by supplementing the body’s own production of levothyroxine, which can be insufficient due to disease, surgery or unknown reasons. Levoxyl serves to support normal energy and metabolism. Levoxyl may be able to repair your particular conditions, if you talk with your physician first about whether Levoxyl is right for you.
Levoxyl Side Effects
Before beginning treatment with Levoxyl, it is important that your doctor be informed of your complete medical history. It is especially important that your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs or have heart disease, hypertension, angina or diabetes. In some cases, these conditions can preclude you from using Levoxyl or require your dose to be adjusted or more closely monitored.
Levoxyl can also interfere with other medications. Discuss with your doctor any other medications you may be taking. This includes prescription as well as over-the counter drugs, vitamins, minerals and natural or herbal supplements. For example, some common aluminum based antacids can bind to Levoxyl and reduce the amount that is in your body – making it less effective.
Levoxyl Withdrawal
If you miss a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as scheduled. Do not take a double dose of Levoxyl. Your doctor will use lab tests to measure the amount of thyroid hormone in your blood. The results of these tests will determine the appropriate dose of Levoxyl. These tests will be repeated and your dose adjusted on a schedule determined by you and your doctor. Side effects of Levoxyl can be serious.
If you experience signs of an allergic reaction like difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips and tongue, or closing of the throat, discontinue use and seek emergency medical attention. Chest pain, tremor, headache, shortness of breath, increased appetite and decreased weight can be symptoms of Levoxyl overdose. If you have any of these serious side effects when taking Levoxyl, contact your doctor immediately. Less serious side effects can include tremor, nervousness or irritability, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, changes in appetite or weight loss, leg cramps, menstrual irregularities and fever, sweating or heat sensitivity. Discuss any unusual or new symptoms with your doctor.
