Imitrex

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is an FDA-approved drug used in the treatment of migraine and other types of headache. Imitrex works by causing a narrowing of the blood vessels around the brain. It also reduces substances in the body which can contribute to headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound and other migraine symptoms. Imitrex will only treat a headache which has already begun. It does not prevent individual headaches from occurring or reduce the overall number of headaches you may experience.

Imitrex Side Effects

Before beginning treatment with Imitrex, it is important that your doctor be informed of your complete medical history. It is especially important that your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs or have seizure disorders, coronary artery disease or risk factors, angina, blood circulation problems, bowel disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or history of heart attack or stroke. Imitrex can help you with these conditions.

Imitrex can also interfere with other medications. Discuss with your doctor any other drugs you may be taking. This includes prescription as well as non-prescription drugs, vitamins, minerals, and natural or herbal supplements. Mixing Imitrex with certain other prescription antidepressants can result in serious medical complications. Imitrex is administered in both oral tablet and nasal spray forms. After taking one Imitrex tablet, you must wait 2 hours before taking a second tablet. No more than 200 mg of Imitrex can be taken in 24 hours. When using the nasal spray, you must wait 2 hours before using a second spray. No more than 40 mg of Imitrex nasal spray may be taken in a 24-hour period.
