Flomax (tamusulosin) is an FDA-approved drug used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and the accompanying difficulty urinating. Flomax belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. These work by relaxing the veins and arteries in the body so that it is easier for blood to flow through them. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the neck of the bladder, improving the flow of urine.
Flomax Side Effects
Before beginning treatment with Flomax, it is important that your doctor be informed of your complete medical history. It is especially important that your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs, have prostrate cancer or will be undergoing cataract surgery. During cataract surgery Flomax can affect your pupils, something your surgeon should be prepared for. In some cases, these conditions can preclude you from using Flomax or require your dose to be adjusted. Flomax can also interfere with other medications. Discuss with your doctor any other drugs you may be taking. This includes prescription as well as non-prescription, over-the counter medications, vitamins, minerals and natural or herbal supplements.
Generic Flomax
Flomax is administered orally, most commonly once a day. It is best to take your dose approximately 30 minutes after a meal. It is important that you drink a full glass of water with the pill and be sure you don’t crush, chew or open the Flomax capsule. If you miss more than one dose, contact your doctor before resuming the medication. Your dose of Flomax may need to be adjusted.
Taking Flomax can impair your thinking and reactions. Take care when driving a car or performing other tasks which could be hazardous. Dizziness and faintness can also occur. Be careful when rising from a seated or lying down position. If you feel faint or dizzy from Flomax, sit or lie down immediately. These side effects can be worsened by consuming alcohol. Insomnia, decreased sex drive, abnormal ejaculation, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat have also been reported. Discuss any Flomax symptoms with your doctor. It is important that you stop using Flomax and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe light-headedness or fainting or if you have an erection that is painful or lasts longer than four hours.
