Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride) is an FDA-approved muscle relaxant used in the treatment of muscle spasms resulting from injuries such as sprains, strains and pulls. Before beginning treatment with Flexeril, it is important that your doctor be informed of your complete medical history. It is especially important that your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs or have glaucoma, difficulty urinating, hyperthyroidism, or are pregnant or nursing. In some cases, these conditions can preclude you from using Flexeril or require your dose to be adjusted. You should talk with your doctor about using Flexeril, before you begin taking this particular drug.

It is not known if Flexeril is transferred through breast milk. It is related, however, to tricyclic antidepressants which have been shown to appear in breast milk. As such, consult with your doctor if you are currently or plan to begin nursing. Flexeril can also interfere with other drugs. Discuss with your doctor your need for Flexeril and any other medications you are taking. This includes prescription as well as non-prescription and over-the counter drugs, vitamins, minerals and natural or herbal supplements. Of special importance is letting your doctor know if you are taking or have taken any of a class of antidepressants known as MAO inhibitors within the last two weeks. Serious and potentially fatal reactions can occur if these drugs are present within your system at the same time.
Drug Flexeril
Flexeril is administered orally. The standard adult dose is 10 milligrams 3 times per day. The drug is designed for short-term use (no more than 3 weeks). The types of injuries Flexeril is prescribed to treat are self-limiting, so a course of treatment longer than 3 weeks is rare and may point out a need for reevaluation of the condition. Side effects of the drug can include dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision. Dry mouth can be alleviated by melting ice chips in the mouth, sucking on hard candies and chewing gum. Until you know how your body reacts to Flexeril, you should not drive a car or perform any tasks which could be hazardous. These side effects are worsened by consuming alcohol. This should be avoided while taking Flexeril. Overdosage of Flexeril can be very serious. Symptoms of overdose can include agitation, confusion, convulsions, dilated pupils, drowsiness, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat and rhythms, muscle stiffness, severely low blood pressure, vomiting and coma.
