Ditropan

Ditropan (Oxybutynin) is a medication prescribed in the treatment of over-active bladder. This is a condition in which frequent or urgent urination, incontinence and increased night time urination occurs. Ditropan works by reducing muscle spasms of the bladder and urinary tract.

Before beginning treatment with Ditropan, it is important that your doctor be informed of your complete medical history. It is especially important that your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs or have uncontrolled glaucoma, liver disease, kidney disease, an enlarged prostate, intestinal disorders, stomach disorders or myasthenia gravis. In some cases, these conditions can preclude you from using Ditropan or require your dose to be adjusted.

Ditropan can also interfere with other prescription drugs. Discuss with your doctor any other medications you may be taking. This includes prescription as well as over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, minerals and natural or herbal supplements. Ditropan is available in both regular and extended-release form (Ditropan XL). If prescribed the extended-release form, do not crush, chew or break the tablets. This can result in too much of the drug being released into your bloodstream at one time. Regardless of the form of the medication your doctor prescribes, each dose of Ditropan must be taken with a full glass of water.

Side effects of the drug can include drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision. It is important that you refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. Drinking alcohol can worsen some of the side effects of Ditropan and should be avoided. It is also important that you take steps to stay hydrated – especially in hot weather or during exercise—and be sure to drink plenty of water while taking Ditropan to prevent dehydration.

Additional side effects include a warming or tingling of the skin, intestinal and stomach discomfort (pain, nausea, vomiting), constipation and/or diarrhea, dry eyes, stuffy nose, back pain and insomnia. If you experience these symptoms, continue using Ditropan and talk to your doctor. Other side effects with Ditropan can occur and should be discussed with your doctor. Serious side effects with Ditropan have been reported, including fever accompanied by hot, dry skin; uneven heart rate and pain, burning or other discomfort when urinating. If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue use and contact your doctor immediately.
